2020 Michter’s Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Finish Rye (MTR)
Nose: A deep sugary nose with a little spiciness as one sniffs with extensiveness. There is a slight sweet airiness that reminds me of the smell of rice cooking – where you smell the steam from the pot just before the rice is cooked. There is also a grounded smell of a Japanese pastry that I can’t recall at the moment.
Palate: The first taste reminds me of the sour mash flavor with less sweetness compared to previous expressions of MTR. A few more sips brings out the sweetness within the bourbon. There is a slight bitterness that lingers with this year’s MTR that isn’t familiar to other version. The finish lingers some as it finishes.
Verdict: Lacking some depth compared to some of the previous years.
