2021 William Larue Weller 12yr 125.3°

Nose:  An initial baking heat that turns into brown sugar.  The heat seems to rise as one takes more of a whiff of the flavor. A light orange color comes to mind as if that of the Autumn showing with elements of subtle sweetness.  It reminds me of getting a freshly baked pie out of the oven with a backdrop of yellowish-brown leaves falling in the background.

Palate:  An initial spicy undertone that leads into a darker sweetness–like tinge of dark chocolate swirled with brown sugar.  More sweetness accompanies the back that seems to remain and gently seat next to you as the flavor permeates the mouth.  The sweetness builds as it goes as the heat of the item builds as well.  Many items come in hotter then tapers off as we adjust; this appears to do the opposite.  The flavor seems to cake at the end, leaving it to feel denser towards the finish, lingering for quite some time.

Verdict:  Laure is known for a strong mid-palate; I feel this year’s is a little softer initially as it builds back in your journey of it towards the depth we are familiar with.
